Blog Task 2

Roger Callois was a French Sociologist. He studied games and play in society and found some interesting results.
Roger concluded that there are six characteristics of play:

  1. It is free.
  2. Its not obligatory.
  3. It is separate from mundane life.
  4. It is uncertain.
  5. Results can not be pre-determined.
  6. Players use their initiative.
Roger concluded that there are four forms of play:

  1. Agon, or competition, eg Chess.
  2. Alea, or chance, eg slot machines.
  3. Mimicry, or mimesis, or role playing eg Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
  4. Ilinx (Greek for "Whirlpool"), or virtigo, eg riding a roller coaster.
Some of the most popular game, which I learnt from watching "Game Britannia", combine a variety of these. The most popular combine agon and alea. Where a game includes luck and strategy like poker or war hammer 40,000.
